The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Its announcement of 6 October recognises his contributions to the IceCube observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

These particles very rarely interact with matter. When a collision occurs in the ice, sensors can detect the associated light. IceCube thus uses a cubic kilometre of South Pole ice as an enormous observing instrument.

The significance goes beyond detecting an elusive particle. According to the Academy, these neutrinos cross the cosmos without changing direction or losing energy, carrying information about extreme environments that other messengers do not convey in the same way.

Halzen presented the idea in 1988; IceCube was completed in 2011. The individual prize therefore recognises a contribution to an instrument built and operated by an international collaboration. The announcement rewards long-term scientific work, not an experiment performed for the first time on 6 October.
