The Mandela effect: Jared Baum explores the memories we share

Family photographs and familiar stories can produce conflicting certainties. Jared Baum’s French-language book offers a method for examining memories and evidence.

When several people remember the same thing

A photograph emerges from an album. Two relatives recognise the people but place the scene in different locations. A third repeats a story told for years. This constructed example illustrates a familiar question: what should we do when sincere memories disagree with the available records? In L’effet Mandela : Ce que la science et la psychologie nous disent, Jared Baum suggests examining the details rather than turning disagreement into accusation.

In everyday usage, the Mandela effect refers to similar inaccurate memories reported by several people about the same object or event. Naming the phenomenon does not explain its origin. We still need to establish whether people are discussing the same version, period or medium. A different translation, an adaptation or a cropped photograph can change the comparison.

The book distinguishes false memories from lies: someone may sincerely report inaccurate information. It also separates confidence, accuracy and provenance. A confident answer is not evidence, and hesitation does not establish an error. When discussing a detail, we can ask what confirms it and how the information was acquired.

A photograph cannot answer every question

A photograph lets us examine what appears within its frame. It does not guarantee a date written in a recent caption or show objects outside the frame. A copy published ten times does not provide ten independent photographs. The book encourages readers to trace documents to their origins and specify what each item can actually establish.

This care may help families whose albums, letters and stories circulate across different places. The point is not to distrust every inherited story, but to distinguish preserved records, accounts and unanswered questions. Writing an answer before searching also preserves the record of a correction instead of retrospectively erasing initial uncertainty.

A book that invites readers to investigate

The manuscript supplied for this presentation includes sixteen chapters, eight workshops, four extended fictional investigations, four guided activities, a visual atlas and an investigation notebook. Narrative characters are explicitly fictional. They explain a method and are neither collected testimonies nor scientific experiments conducted with participants.

In a bookshop investigation, a motif appears on a bookmark but not on the photograph of the shopfront being examined. This fictional example distinguishes two media without claiming that the bookmark necessarily caused the memory. A newly dated record might refine the conclusion. The book encourages limiting claims to the documents actually examined.

The activities encourage observation and reflection. They are not validated psychological tests, diagnostic tools or a promise of perfect memory. Parallel-reality hypotheses are examined as speculation, without being presented as an established explanation of the Mandela effect. The practical benefit is learning to formulate a question and examine one’s certainties.

Start with a low-stakes question

Begin with a quotation or a cultural image that has no sensitive personal stakes. Record the detail, your initial answer and the relevant version. Then look for an appropriate reference without suggesting an answer in questions to other people. Preserve what confirms the detail, what contradicts it and what the evidence cannot resolve. This small file provides a concrete starting point for reading.
