Digital currency in Morocco: BAM publishes research, not a launch timetable

Bank Al-Maghrib announced two working papers on central bank digital currency on 9 October 2026. Its official release presents their publication as a contribution to scientific and public debate.
One examines issues and lessons for Morocco; the other proposes a macroeconomic model with a digital currency option. The first paper states that its authors’ opinions do not necessarily reflect the central bank’s position.
This distinction matters when reading the news: publishing research does not announce a new currency entering circulation. The release consulted gives neither a launch date nor access arrangements for individuals.
To follow the issue, analytical findings, possible trials and implementation decisions should therefore be kept distinct. A model examines assumptions; it does not by itself describe an available service. Future official communications can clarify the steps selected.
