Morocco: banking liquidity needs rise while the money-market rate stays stable

The average banking liquidity deficit reached 155.4 billion dirhams from 30 September to 7 October 2026, up 10.1%, according to BKGR cited by Infomédiaire on 9 October. This concerns an increase in banks’ liquidity needs.

The average banking liquidity deficit reached 155.4 billion dirhams from 30 September to 7 October 2026, up 10.1%, according to BKGR cited by Infomédiaire on 9 October. This concerns an increase in banks’ liquidity needs.

The same report gives a stable weighted average rate of 2.25% and Bank Al-Maghrib’s seven-day advances reduced to 59.7 billion dirhams. BourseNews reports the same figures from Fixed Income Weekly; these reports are not two independent measurements.

Reading the figures requires distinguishing an amount, its change and a rate. Average needs increase over the observed period while the reported rate remains unchanged. The 10.1% rise therefore cannot be recast as an increase in borrowing costs.

These aggregate data describe neither each bank’s situation nor the terms offered to each borrower. They illuminate one week of the money market. Tracking developments requires comparing matching periods and indicators rather than placing figures of different kinds side by side.
