The Swedish Academy awards the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian author Anne Carson. The official announcement of 8 October highlights her inventiveness and dialogue with the classical tradition, which have produced new literary forms.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson has combined poetry, translation and university teaching. Her official biobibliography emphasises the importance of words and their etymology in her work. Antiquity becomes material for creation rather than merely a collection of references.

Three books provide starting points: Eros the Bittersweet (1986), an essay about desire; Autobiography of Red (1998), a novel in verse; and If Not, Winter (2002), a translation of Sappho’s fragments. These titles illustrate the range of forms discussed by the Nobel committee.

Our reading: the award invites readers to explore writing that crosses the boundaries between poetry, narrative and scholarship. It does not single out one book. Readers can begin with a familiar form and then follow the shifts Carson brings to language.
