A fossil bought in Marrakech’s souk in 1994 bears the shahada on both sides. The Complutense University of Madrid’s announcement of 7 October 2026 presents a study of the object by UCM and CSIC researchers.

The material is an internal mould of a Jurassic bivalve shell. The researchers propose a carving date in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century and interpret its use as protective. Both the dating and function remain evidence-based hypotheses.

The distinction matters: the geological age of a material does not automatically date human intervention. An object can pass through several uses; its material and inscription do not describe the same moment.

Reading this study therefore requires separating observation from reconstruction. The letters are present on the object; the intention of the person who carved them is interpreted. This caution helps explain a distinctive piece without making it general evidence about the beliefs of an entire population.
