On 5 October 2026, Le Matin reports oriental hornet sightings in northern Morocco and a call for an inventory from Tangier’s environmental observatory.

Le360, also dated 5 October, corroborates the alert. Both articles distinguish reported presence from a precise measure of its extent. Our commentary addresses this previously published information, without presenting it as a new discovery on 9 October.

Our analysis: the number of circulating accounts does not directly reveal the number of affected sites. One observation may be repeated many times, while less closely monitored areas remain poorly documented. Assessing change requires comparable observations that are identified, dated and verified.

The editorial task is therefore to preserve the difference between an alert and an assessment. Professionals’ concerns deserve reporting with attribution, but do not suffice to announce spread across the entire country or quantify losses. Any update should rely on new field data.
